Tips from Gumption Coffee On How To Not F#$% Up a Cup of Coffee

We know if you’ve seen The Irishman, you must have watched Casino at some point in your life. And if you know Casino, you know all about Artie Piscano. This guy could fuck up a cup of coffee. And boy did he (read: he ruined everything that made Vegas great). That’s why we’re sharing a few easy tips from Gumption Coffee co-owner and roaster Hazel de los Reyes in advance of our Leisurely cupping class and tour this weekend:

1) Clean! Old stuck-on milk and rancid coffee oils on anything is gross, it smells, and can foul up an otherwise lovely coffee. Keep your brewers, filters and cups clean. Then your brew will be true.

2) Fresh! Coffee beans retain their peak aromas and flavors within a few weeks from roast. Keep an eye on the roast date and manage your coffee stash.

3) Match! Buy beans that suits you. It will take a few goes, but it’s ok, you’re exploring what you really like: with milk or black, strong or delicate, bold or balanced, fruity or chocolatey, heavy or light. You’ll find coffee is reliable and comforting partner once you’ve found your match.

4) Share! Coffee is a blessing on its own, but you’ll be surprised at the stimulating conversations and sharing that can go on when enjoying brews with others.

5) Go! Coffee is a flavorful brew that makes you want to do things. So go, do stuff, do it with gumption, and when you’re done, maybe it’s time for another cup of coffee.
