Whether you’re a chef or a total kitchen putz, we’ve all heard it before: Nobody cooks like Grandma. Her home cooking nourishes our stomachs and our souls, and leaves us with delicious childhood memories that continue to tug at our hearts.

Join us for a very special event with our new partner, Cooking with Granny, as Grandma Lumen brings you back to the sounds and aromas of Grandma’s kitchen.

A native of the Philippines, Grandma Lumen emigrated to the States to become a teacher, beloved by her students during her 20-year tenure at a Bronx public school. Still an active community leader, she continues to advocate for public school teachers and works with the Philippine Consulate of New York. She grew up in the countryside, where her family farmed purple yam and threw huge neighborhood cookouts at harvest time.

During this dinner-and-demo pop-up, Grandma Lumen will teach us how to make some of the Philippines’ foundational dishes, including lumpia, chicken adobo, and her famous Purple Yam Dessert - “ube halaya.” Caroline Shin, our co-host, and founder of Cooking with Granny, will facilitate the conversation and storytelling.

Beyond our feast, we’ll delve into the stories of immigration, adaptation, and cultural heritage as they relate to Grandma Lumen’s traditional Filipino home cooking. Tying it all together, there's no better place to unwind on a Saturday evening than in our gorgeous East Village Town House for this uniquely authentic culinary and cultural experience!

Chicken Adobo / Chicken stewed in vinegar, garlic and soy sauce, then pan-fried golden
