Can a Great Super Bowl Commercial Make Us Love a Product?

Well, the Super Bowl came and went, and unless you’re a die hard Chiefs fan, you’re probably talking about what commercials you enjoyed the most. While sales will determine which brands make their money back after investing in an estimated $5.6 million for one 30 second spot, the Internet has already reached a verdict on which ads worked. Those include Budweiser Seltzer featuring Post Malone, Bill Murray’s Jeep spot, and Doritos featuring Sam Elliott and Lil Nas.

But in this day and age where people want to experience products, and understand a brand’s social conscious, do expensive commercials still resonate? The death of Mr. Peanut only to reveal a new baby Yoda inspired nut mascot only revealed that mascots are officially irrelevant. And while celebrities appearing on behalf of a brand can be fun (We’re looking at you Jason Momoa poking fun at your giant biceps and flowing locks), they can only go so far in getting a message across. Unless you’re Tom Brady, then you definitely got the message across you aren’t going anywhere. Except maybe the Raiders. Okay we’re still confused about where Brady is going to wind up so this actually doesn’t help our point. What we want to know is: do commercials still tell a good story?
